Last night when I asked where some of the missing children were, I was told it was Brigada Day at school.
Ok, I’ve heard of many things, but Brigada Day was not one of them. I asked for an explanation and when they explained it to me, it all came back. They had not told me the proper name, just the description of the activities.
They have a concept that would be impossible to do in most if not all American public schools but actually, makes sense. On Brigada Day, the student go to the school before school opens and help clean it getting it ready for the coming school year, which if I remember correctly is June 5th or 6th.

Having the students help take care of the school would certainly give a sense of ownership to the students and an afternoon getting rid of graffiti would make one think twice before defacing a wall. Not that I have any idea that graffiti is a problem, but that was just an illustration.
